Invited by a mathematician
In February 1923 German physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955) visited Barcelona. It was two years after receiving the Nobel prize and invited by mathematician Esteve Terrades (Einstein would define him as a "privileged mind"). The City Council had reserved a room in the prestigious Hotel Colon. However, nobody met him at the station. He’d end up staying at Cuatro Naciones inn, in La Rambla. The owner of this modest establishment found him playing the violin. -
They weren't holidaysThe program of Theory of Relativity’s creator was full of appointments and lectures. One of them was given in the auditorium of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB), just above the Poliorama theater, at Rambla de los Estudios. The treasurer of the institution, Josep Serrat, would pay 500 pesetas (3 euros) to "the wise professor" for the conference. He’d also visit the School of Industrial Engineers or Institut d'Estudis Catalans.

Galileo fruitThe most remarkable acts of his stay are the official reception at City Town’s Saló de Cent hall and a private dinner offered by engineer and politician Rafael Campalans. In the speech that took place at Casa Gran, the scientist referred to Barcelona as "this beautiful city, sunny, and splendidly located". Regarding food, the name of some dishes on the menu has remained for history, sprinkled with scientific references in his honor. Thus, we find Galileo fruit, Michelson sauce, TÃo Pepe inertial sherry or relativist CodornÃu champagne.
