Museums of Barcelona to open their doors until one o’clock in the morning to celebrate Nit dels Museus or Museum Night.

83 museums will be part of Barcelona Museum Night or Nit dels Museus, held on Saturday, May 19th from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. For eleventh year, the Catalan capital celebrates this cultural event with concerts, performances, guided tours and, of course, free entrance to cultural centers, museums and creation factories.

This year, Museum Nights is celebrated under the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage and International Museum Day. Barcelona centres invite you to discover up to 106 temporary or permanent exhibitions and collections. These are distributed between the center of the city, Espluges, Badalona, ​​Cornellá, l’Hospitalet, Sant Adrià, Santa Coloma and Sant Joan d’Espí. As a novelty, this year Gaudi’s Casa Vicens, the Architects Association of Catalonia and the Espai Subirachs join the party.

Nit dels Museus evidences that museums and party are not two opposing concepts. Concerts, performances, theatrical poetry have been programmed to provide new ways of understanding heritage. We highlight e a contemporary dance performance at Virreina Center de la Imatge, a light and sound show in the monumental ensemble of the Plaça del Rei and theater shows at the Museu Frederic Marès and the Museu del Disseny.

Museum Night  in Barcelona and Europe

Museum Night is a cultural event held for the first time in Berlin in 1997. However, Barcelona would not be incorporated until eleven years later. T4,000 museums from all over Europe participate this edition, a figure that has increased since the first Lange Nacht der Museen (long night of museums). The same applies to the number of attendees. First time that the Catalan capital joined this festival of culture did it with 58,000 visitors. Thus, the Nit dels Museus 2017 ended with 175,000. In this way, the most visited centers were the MNAC, the modernist site of Sant Pau and the MACBA.
